Hilti Machine (Rotary Hammer) Buying Guide for Contractors

For most Karachi contractors, the right hilti machine is a 2–3 kg SDS-plus rotary hammer with three modes: drilling, hammer drilling and chiselling. It drills anchor and pipe holes in concrete and does light breaking. Choose an SDS-max breaker only if your crew breaks concrete every day or drills holes above about 28 mm.
What is a hilti machine?
In Pakistan, “hilti machine” means any rotary hammer, whatever the brand. Hilti is one brand; Bosch, Makita, Total and DongCheng all make rotary hammers too. A rotary hammer uses a piston to hit the bit, so it drills concrete far faster than an ordinary impact drill.
SDS-plus or SDS-max: which do I need?
- SDS-plus machines (about 2–4 kg) drill holes up to roughly 26–28 mm in concrete and do light chiselling. This is the everyday site machine.
- SDS-max machines (about 5 kg and up) take bigger bits and hit much harder. Use them for large holes and regular breaking.
What matters more: watts or joules?
Joules (impact energy) tell you how hard the machine hits, and that decides drilling speed in concrete. Watts show motor input. Compare joules between machines of the same class, and check weight, because a heavy machine tires workers on overhead jobs.
Do I need a 2-mode or 3-mode machine?
A 3-mode machine adds chiselling (hammer only, no rotation) for removing tiles, chasing walls for conduit and light breaking. The extra cost is small, so most contractors choose 3-mode.
Which accessories should I buy with it?
SDS-plus drill bits in the sizes you use most, a pointed chisel and a flat chisel. Buy bits with the same shank type as the machine. See discs, bits and accessories.
